Bridgerton Season 1 Episode 6 Review: When The Honeymoon Turns Into Betrayal

Épisode de Bridgerton With Mary & Blake: A Bridgerton & Queen Charlotte Podcast par Mary & Blake Larsen · 5 janvier 2021

In our Bridgerton Season 1 Episode 6 review, we break down “Swish,” the episode where Daphne and Simon’s honeymoon fantasy collapses into the most difficult conflict of their marriage. The episode begins with sex, romance, Clyvedon, and the gorgeous orchestral cover of Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams.” It ends with Daphne discovering the truth about Simon’s refusal to have children, Simon feeling violated by the way she forces that truth into the open, and both characters realizing that passion is not the same thing as trust.

“Swish” also pushes several of Season 1’s other stories toward disaster. Marina becomes increasingly strategic in her attempt to marry Colin, Penelope tries desperately to stop the engagement, Lady Whistledown turns Marina’s secret into public scandal, and Daphne begins learning that becoming a duchess means taking responsibility for an entire household and estate.

The result is one of the most important episodes of Bridgerton Season 1 because the romantic fantasy finally meets consequence. Daphne and Simon love each other, but neither has been completely honest about what marriage means to them — and “Swish” makes that failure impossible to ignore.

The short answer: Bridgerton Season 1 Episode 6, “Swish,” ends with Daphne learning that Simon is physically capable of having children but has chosen not to because of the vow he made to his father. Daphne then uses sex to test what she has learned, violating Simon’s trust and consent in the process. Their marriage is left deeply damaged, while Lady Whistledown exposes Marina’s pregnancy and destroys her engagement to Colin.

Bridgerton Season 1 Episode 6 Recap: What Happens In “Swish”?

Daphne and Simon begin married life at Clyvedon, where their honeymoon quickly becomes the romantic fantasy Season 1 has spent five episodes promising. The newlyweds are passionately attracted to each other, and Daphne begins discovering a sexual life she was almost completely unprepared for before marriage.

But the honeymoon also exposes how little Daphne understands about sex and pregnancy. Simon has told her that he cannot give her children, and Daphne has accepted that statement because she does not know enough about reproduction to understand what he is actually doing during sex.

As Daphne learns more, she realizes that Simon’s situation is not what she believed. He is physically capable of fathering children. His refusal is a choice connected to the vow he made to his abusive father.

That realization changes the marriage immediately.

Daphne feels deceived because children are enormously important to her and because Simon allowed her lack of sexual education to preserve a misunderstanding that benefited him. Instead of confronting Simon directly, however, Daphne decides to test what she has learned during sex. The encounter ends with Simon recognizing what she has done and feeling deeply violated.

Meanwhile, Marina continues attempting to secure her future by marrying Colin Bridgerton. Penelope tries to warn Colin without fully revealing Marina’s pregnancy, but her plan fails. Marina realizes Penelope loves Colin and tells her that Colin sees Penelope more like a sister than a romantic possibility.

Penelope eventually breaks down with Eloise, while Lady Whistledown delivers the public consequence everyone else has been trying to avoid: Marina’s pregnancy is revealed to the Ton, effectively destroying her engagement to Colin.

Bridgerton Season 1 Episode 6 Review: The Honeymoon Fantasy Has To Break

What makes “Swish” work is that the episode does not treat Daphne and Simon’s honeymoon as a reward the story can simply enjoy forever. The fantasy is there specifically so the episode can break it.

The first half is almost aggressively romantic. Daphne and Simon are newly married, wealthy, beautiful, wildly attracted to each other, and apparently determined to test the structural integrity of every horizontal surface at Clyvedon. “Wildest Dreams” is playing on strings. The rain arrives. The estate looks gorgeous. Everybody gets exactly what they thought they wanted.

But Bridgerton has spent the entire season building its romance around performance, incomplete information, and people hiding what they truly want. Marriage does not magically eliminate those problems.

Simon has hidden the real reason he does not want children. Daphne has entered marriage without enough knowledge to understand what Simon is hiding. Their physical intimacy therefore advances much faster than their ability to communicate honestly with each other.

That imbalance is the real story of “Swish.”

The episode begins with Daphne and Simon believing sex proves how connected they are. It ends by showing that intimacy without honesty can become the place where their relationship is most vulnerable.

Why Is Bridgerton Season 1 Episode 6 Called “Swish”?

The title “Swish” comes from Lady Featherington coaching Marina on how to move in a dress designed to conceal her pregnancy. Marina needs the dress to move gracefully enough that the Ton sees exactly what Lady Featherington wants it to see: an attractive young woman ready for marriage rather than an unmarried woman carrying another man’s child.

That makes “Swish” more than a funny piece of dialogue. It becomes a description of the episode’s larger obsession with performance and concealment.

Marina is hiding her pregnancy beneath a carefully constructed presentation. Simon is hiding the full truth about why he refuses to have children. Daphne is performing the role of the blissfully happy duchess while privately beginning to question what she has been told. Penelope is hiding her feelings for Colin. Lady Whistledown hides behind anonymity while exposing everyone else.

Everyone is trying to make the outside look elegant while something much messier is happening underneath.

That is “Swish.”

What Happens Between Daphne And Simon At The End Of “Swish”?

The ending of “Swish” begins when Daphne finally understands that Simon is not incapable of having children. He has deliberately chosen not to have them because of the vow he made to his father.

Daphne has good reason to feel betrayed. Simon knew she desperately wanted a family, knew she had almost no sexual education, and allowed her to believe his inability to have children was physical rather than voluntary. That prevented Daphne from making a fully informed decision about what she was accepting when she married him.

But Daphne responds to that betrayal by committing another one.

During sex, she deliberately changes what is happening in order to determine whether Simon has been telling her the truth. Simon immediately recognizes what she has done, and the encounter becomes the emotional rupture that ends the honeymoon.

The episode does not give us a comfortable moral escape hatch. Simon’s deception matters. Daphne’s action matters. His wrongdoing does not erase hers, and hers does not erase his.

That is why the scene is so difficult.
