🎯 Havelock Ellis: Psychology of Sexuality, Taboos, and Chinese Translation
🔎 How can sexual desire be studied scientifically when morality, modesty, and social conventions impose silence? Why did its translation by Pan Guangdan shake up ideas about sexuality in China?
🎧 In this episode of OpenCulture Books, we return to Psychology of Sex by Havelock Ellis, a figure in the history of sexology. He investigates desire, arousal, and human relationships without reducing sexuality to illness or deviance. How can individual experiences be conceptualized without confining them to categories of normal and abnormal?
The podcast also takes us to Pan Guangdan, a Chinese intellectual affiliated with Tsinghua University and translator of Ellis. In a restricted-access Beijing library, his reading of the book raises a question: how can a foreign work alter representations of the body and intimate life? The translation confronts Western knowledge, Chinese traditions, and social norms.
🧠 From Body to Emotions: A History of Sexology
What do "tumescence" and "detumescence" signify in Ellis's thought? These two concepts describe, respectively, the buildup of sexual arousal and its subsidence. These concepts link physiological responses, imagination, and affectivity. Their value is historical: Ellis's hypotheses should not be confused with present-day scientific knowledge.
The hosts also return to female modesty, codes of courtship, rituals of pursuit, and partner interactions. How can the biological, cultural, and educational dimensions of romantic behaviors be distinguished? How do moral conventions structure desire?
🌏 Between China and the West: Translating the Words of Desire
With Pan Guangdan, the episode addresses the hurdles faced by the dissemination of knowledge about sex: choice of terminology, cultural resistance, the reception of a foreign text, and intellectual freedom. Translating Psychology of Sex also meant inventing a vocabulary to discuss topics long surrounded by silence.
This historical detour asks a contemporary question. What happens to romantic encounters, flirting, courtship customs, and intimate relations when social practices change? Do models inherited from the past truly allow us to interpret contemporary relationships?
