S7#38 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 Interview “Architects: Legacy and Boldness,” with Éléonore Marantz and Jean-Louis Violeau
Épisode de Com d'Archi par DEPONDT Anne-Charlotte · 1 septembre 2026 · 51 min
How do you become an architect, who do you design for, and with what degree of freedom?
To close Season 7 of Com d’Archi, Anne-Charlotte Depondt welcomes sociologist Jean-Louis Violeau and architectural historian Éléonore Marantz. Two kindred perspectives, rich in fruitful nuances, explore what shapes the profession, its teaching, and its place in society.
Historical depth, insightful sociological analysis, and an intimate knowledge of the architectural world give this conversation a rare richness. Knowledge is shared with spontaneity, humor, and freedom of expression.
From their personal journeys to the challenges of research and transmission, the conversation leads us to May 1968, a moment of rupture and redefinition. Their book Mai 68. Parole à l’architecture, which they co-edited with Caroline Maniaque, brings together the voices of those who took part in this transformation. What remains of it today in architecture schools, access to commissions, and the figure of the architect?
A lively and candid conversation in which collective ambitions meet the constraints of the profession. Looking ahead, one shared conviction emerges: faced with the challenges of our time, we must continue to question the conditions in which architecture is conceived and open up new possibilities.
