In this episode, I welcome Anna Burrell, Group Head of Product Design, Research & Service Design at Kingfisher, and Alex Chrysandreas, Product and Experience Design leader at Kingfisher.
Kingfisher is the home improvement group behind B&Q, Castorama, Brico Dépôt, Screwfix and TradePoint, operating across the UK, France, Poland, Spain, Portugal and Ireland.
Anna and Alex lead the group's design and research chapter, and this episode is about what it actually takes to scale design inside an organisation that big: building one design system for six brands without flattening what makes each of them different, turning skeptical stakeholders into advocates through demonstration rather than persuasion, and figuring out how to even measure what design contributes when it's fully embedded inside product teams.
What we explored together:
→ Anna's path from TV production and content to leading Kingfisher's design, research and service design chapter
→ Building a design system across six brands: from "one consistent experience" to shared foundations with room for local differentiation
→ Turning stakeholders into advocates through roadshows, design sprints and hands-on demonstration rather than persuasion
→ The Design & Research Chapter: a shared community across Screwfix, Castorama, Brico Dépôt and B&Q
→ Why measuring "the impact of design" is harder than it sounds when design is fully embedded in product teams
→ Kingfisher's early thinking on designing for AI-driven products and experiences
Thank you to Anna Burrell and Alex Chrysandreas for sharing their vision of design at Kingfisher.
